What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine identifies and addresses the root causes of disease to promote long-term wellness, rather than simply alleviating symptoms. We use a systems based approach to integrate and restore the natural, healthy function of all your body’s systems. Evaluation and diagnosis are based on lab evaluations (blood chemistry, urinalysis, hormone and endocrine systems, the gut biome, etc.), a full health history, and systems review. Treatment plans are individualized to each unique individual and may include: a nutritional plan/modification, modern supplements, traditional natural medicines, lifestyle recommendations, acupuncture, and cranio-sacral therapy. Principle #1: Symptoms are Signals Like the red warning light in your car, a physical symptom is a signal telling you that an underlying health problem needs to be corrected. Treating a symptom without uncovering the real cause is like placing a piece of black tape over the red warning light. This leaves unresolved illnesses and partially effective, symptomatic treatments that fail over time. Principle #2 Remove the Triggers of Illness. The primary triggers are – foods, bugs, toxins, stressors, and hormones. Without removing these, the problem will continue to return. Principle #3 Recognize Biological Individuality No two people are alike. The physical, mental and emotional qualities expressed by people are a reflection of their individual body chemistries and different treatment requirements. This will enable individuals to fully express their true health potential. This model of care was developed because although the modern medical system is often excellent for acute conditions, people are more frequently unable to find solutions for their chronic conditions.
